It starts by sketching the key BRI-associated  <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">projects in the region, and the mixed responses to them in the host countries. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Hungary will serve as an example to discuss the difficulties and opportunities China <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and Eastern European countries encounter while developing and implementing BRI-<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">associated projects. Hungary also offers an interesting case study as it has become a  <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">key proponent of Chinese investments in the European Union, yet even in Hungary <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the implementation of Chinese projects faces problems and obstacles. The talk will  <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">zoom in on two projects to illustrate these challenges. The first is the Budapest- <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Belgrade railway upgrade, a flagship BRI-project meant to showcase China\u2019s ability <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to \u2018build according to EU standards\u2019. The second is Chinese battery-maker CATL\u2019s  <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">decision to choose Debrecen, Hungary as the location of its new factory in Eastern <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Europe, which drew significant local criticism.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span id=\"page128R_mcid97\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Teilnehmende<\/span><\/span><span id=\"undefined\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page128R_mcid15\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page128R_mcid16\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span id=\"page128R_mcid16\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tam\u00e1s Peragovics<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is a visiting researcher at ZOiS. His research is focused on China\u2019s political  <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and economic relations with Eastern Europe. He is a research fellow at the Institute of World  <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Economics (Centre for Economic and Regional Studies) in Budapest, Hungary and a part-time <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">assistant professor at E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University\u2019s International Relations Department.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page128R_mcid17\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page128R_mcid18\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page128R_mcid18\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Julia Langbein<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is head of the Political Economy and Integration research <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cluster at ZOiS, where she also leads the research project \u2018China, the EU and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">economic development in Eastern Europe and Eurasia\u2019 as part of De:link\/\/Re:link.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page128R_mcid19\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page128R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Der Vortrag fand am Dienstag, dem 2.
